Let's get to know the intimate and lively English pub, through five key points on the menu.

The Pub restaurant surprises with its atmosphere: both cosy and lively, with an intimate décor that combines wood from the walls to the ceilings and creates the sensation of entering a different geography. It’s an authentic pub in the Pestana Carlton Madeira, a hotel in the centre of Funchal on the seafront.

The Pub combines the typical British pub atmosphere with a varied and interesting gastronomic offer. From food to drinks, let’s get to know the restaurant in five key points of the menu.

Local

The British influence can be felt, although the local presence is strong: the menu boasts many (and good) dishes from the island of Madeira. Recommendations include pork in wine and garlic, as well as various options like the traditional bolo do caco flatbread. Other highlights include caco espada, a fillet of scabbard fish, with the irreverent but traditional combo of lettuce, tomato and Madeira banana; not forgetting the Madeira style prego (steak sandwich).

Essentials

Being a pub, the menu wouldn’t be complete without handmade burgers, chicken wings and pizzas. The latter are made with fresh dough and customers act as pizzaiolo, choosing the ingredients for their own pizza. The list of ingredients is pretty conventional, although, the more adventurous gourmands can opt for green asparagus or the tasty cottage cheese with passion fruit.

Classics

Of course, classic British dishes are a favourite with patrons, who regularly tuck into fish and chips, which boasts super-fresh fish and crispy batter served with chips and salad with tartar sauce. Another top choice is the pub steak, which includes 200g of grilled steak, rustic potatoes, green beans and a sauce chosen by the customer.

Necessities

The menu has a few star dishes, however, like any pub worth its salt, everything is prepared with precision and flavour. There’s a range of toasts, sandwiches, wraps, salads and various snacks to enjoy and share. As for desserts, who can resist a creamy apple pie?

Refreshments

Whether to complement meals or as the main attraction, there’s an extensive drinks menu to discover. In addition to the best-known cocktails (such as the Aperol Spritz, Sex On The Beach and Negroni), there’s a selection of sangrias, non-alcoholic cocktails (including the Madeiran Nikita) and, of course, the traditional local poncha.
