For 11 days in summer, Óbidos’ Medieval Market transforms the walled village into a living piece of history, where traditions are revived.
Óbidos needs few excuses to be visited. Just to make it even more special, when summer comes around, the village dresses up for one of its most popular events: the Medieval Market.
For almost two weeks in July, the streets of Óbidos are filled with the sounds, smells and sights of the time – knights in armour, merchants in tunics, falconers and musicians, all adding energy and excitement to the proceedings. In addition to the parades and tournaments, visitors can enjoy themed dinners, sample food inspired by ancient recipes, explore old crafts or just observe daily life, as if it were a period scene.
Although the ambience is engaging and lively, there’s still plenty of calmer endeavours, such as visiting museums, bookshops, craft shops and small chapels, which reveal a more contemplative side of Óbidos – perfect to explore between performances or just enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
