Inaugurated in 2018, the Vila Óbidos Pousada is the first to offer a bed and breakfast model. It’s located within the village walls and used to be home to the Misericórdia hospital and maternity ward, where many inhabitants of Óbidos were born.
What remains from those times are memories and some old doors, which can be seen in the traditional, now renovated 18th-century house. It has proved popular with the many tourists who visit this historic medieval village known for its ginjinha (sweet sour cherry liqueur) and more recent literary festivals. “Many stay one night in Óbidos, and then leave for Lisbon or another destination,” says Catarina Fernandes, assistant manager of the three Óbidos pousadas. This was the second to open, due to increasing demand.
The 17 rooms (classic, superior and premium) have the usual comforts, as well as views of the old walls or the village at cheaper prices than Óbidos’s other pousadas.
Rua Direita is the main street, and undoubtedly the busiest. There are bookshops, craft shops and shops selling regional liqueurs, just a few minutes’ walk away. That said, the pousada is quiet at any time of the day, as well as offering a good night’s sleep.
Highly rated by our guests, breakfast is served overlooking an interior patio adorned by a lemon tree. There’s no restaurant, but dinner can be booked at the famous Castelo Pousada, just a stone’s throw away.
