Set in the heart of town, Convento Tavira Pousada has many historical layers, some of which were literally unearthed during the conversion works at the former Nossa Senhora da Graça convent. A prime example are the ruins of a 12th-century Islamic neighbourhood, with various houses. “For nine months, we had archaeologists poring over what was meant be an indoor swimming pool or spa,” says Hélia Carvalho, pousada manager.
When the Convento Tavira Pousada was inaugurated in 2006, it came with an added extra: a museum with the abovementioned Islamic vestiges, as well as items from other historical periods discovered in the surrounding area, thanks to a partnership with Museu de Tavira.
Founded in the 16th century, the convent once belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine. A coat of arms bearing a two-headed eagle is still visible at the entrance. With the dissolution of the monasteries in the 19th century, the convent was turned into a military barracks, the Quartel da Graça. Nowadays, it’s one of the most iconic pousadas in southern Portugal, and popular with tourists all year round.
The location is perfect, especially for those who want a car-free holiday. “Many guests arrive, park up and do everything on foot: walking around the town centre, visiting the local attractions or going to the beach,” says Carvalho. Ilha de Tavira beach is a 15-minute boat ride from the town centre. Tavira has plenty to see, with over 20 churches, good restaurants and a famous Roman bridge linking the two banks of the river Gilão.
Located in a garden overlooking part of Tavira’s old wall, the pousada has two outdoor pools – one for children and another for adults – and forms a veritable oasis in the middle of the town.
What were once convent cells and a library became 36 rooms, duly categorised as standard, superior and suites (five), the latter having been named after historical figures with a connection to the town, such as King Sebastião and Almanzor.
The best place to enjoy Tavira’s warm evenings is the pousada’s cloister, where guests can order from the Mouraria restaurant, which serves local culinary delights such as roast Santa Luzia octopus with sweet potatoes and tuna muxama, sometimes called “sea ham” due to its jamon-like appearance and texture.
