In search of the finest infinity pools, we found ourselves – unsurprisingly! – in the Douro. Taking a dip in a pool that overlooks this river takes the experience to a whole new level.
In Porto, the Douro River is very much a star, and not just when it comes to travelling on a boat or crossing a bridge. There are quieter but equally impressive experiences, such as diving into an infinity pool with a stunning view of the river and surrounding landscape. Combining classic charm and industrial modernity, the Pestana Palácio do Freixo and Pestana Douro Riverside offer different ways of contemplating the iconic watercourse. What do they have in common? Well, it’s the view, which is even finer when having a dip.
Pestana Palácio do Freixo
Originally built in the 18th-century and designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the Pestana Palácio do Freixo is housed in an impressive baroque palace. The 5-star hotel in Porto, national monument, combines historic grandeur with modern-day comfort. Strangely enough, one of the hotel’s greatest attractions is actually located outside. We’re talking about the infinity pool, which extends to the river – quietly, unhurried. This wonderful setting is particularly impressive in the late afternoon, with the light reflecting upon the Douro’s ebb and flow.
Pestana Douro Riverside
More recently, after major renovation, an iconic soap factory was transformed into the Pestana Douro Riverside. Now, the hotel with pool facing the Douro river offers a contemporary and modern feel, inviting you to stay in Porto. The hotel restaurant and bar share views of the river, as well as the infinity pool, which is surrounded by an idyllic setting, where the last rays of the sun cross the famous Freixo bridge.
Two styles, one destiny
While the Palácio do Freixo provides a more classic experience that’s marked by history and architecture, the Pestana Douro Riverside is more contemporary in its approach. Which one you choose depends on what you’re looking for. That said, both offer the chance to spend an afternoon at the infinity pool, undoubtedly one of the highlights of your stay: a moment of escape, with the Douro as a backdrop.
