Situated at an altitude of 1,993 metres, the Torre (Tower), which marks the region’s highest point, is a must-see landmark. There’s plenty to explore in the River Zêzere’s glacial valley, which invites visitors to enjoy walks and the odd picnic, weather permitting. A place of great beauty and freshness, it’s located near the interesting town of Manteigas, with direct access to the highest point of the mountain’s central massif (Torre). Nearby Covão da Ametade is worth a visit, while those looking for traditional mountain dishes should try one of the various restaurants in Manteigas.
The richness of the heritage and places of interest extends throughout the mountains, and even beyond, to the towns and villages of Cova da Beira, such as Belmonte (where you can visit the imposing Centum Cellas Tower) and Sortelha. Guarda, Covilhã and Seia, or even Penhas Douradas, near the top of the mountain and close to the River Mondego’s source – should be on visitors’ itineraries.
