Somewhere off the coast or a place inland? The mainland or islands? Here are a few suggestions for a dream holiday for the whole family.

With the Easter holidays nearly upon us, choose from a thousand and one places to discover. Although a relatively short break, there’s still plenty of time to drop the usual routines, while relaxing and enjoying moments as a family.

Avoiding the often-numerous hours spent reaching destinations further afield, Portugal boasts countless great places to stay. As the south of the country is warmer at this time, that’s where we’re going, as we dream of long, sunny days with our nearest and dearest. Take a look at our recommendations and find inspiration for your next holiday.

Alentejo

Book a long stay at a hotel in Alentejo, where time seems to pass more slowly, in a good way. As the days get longer, enjoy family bike rides, long lunches and dinners of delicious regional fare, time exploring picturesque villages and towns, not to mention local traditions, such as Alentejo singing and handicrafts.

Algarve

If activities are your thing, make sure to book your hotel in Algarve, on Portugal’s southernmost coast. Enjoy cliffside beaches, the region’s water parks and hiking in the mountains, as well as the many caves found along the coast, which can be reached by boat, canoe or a standup paddle board.

Madeira

Also known as the “pearl of the Atlantic”, Madeira is a tropical paradise with diverse landscapes that range from beaches and forests to towns and mountain peaks. If you choose a hotel in Madeira, your holiday might well include adventures in levadas (unique irrigation channels), sunbathing on volcanic beaches and tasty local cuisine, such as steak sandwiches (with local bolo do caco bread), grilled limpets and honey cake.

Porto Santo

Well-known for its golden sands and crystalline water, this small island is the perfect spot to recharge your batteries. Book a hotel in Porto Santo and enjoy mild temperatures at both beach and pool, not to mention the opportunity to explore the place’s arid landscapes by bicycle. For more adventurous souls, there’s the chance to go snorkelling and diving. With excellent visibility conditions up to a depth of around 40 metres, unforgettable experiences are guaranteed.
