In Brazil, summer is just around the corner, which makes it the perfect time to plan a trip to Rio de Janeiro, a remarkable spot that offers an unrivalled combination of sun, beach and culture.
Nicknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvellous City), it’s easy to see why. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, Rio de Janeiro boasts a tropical climate, city beaches, must-see places, impressive monuments and a cultural scene that ranges from bustling neighbourhoods to sophisticated museums and cultural centres.
Planning a week in Rio de Janeiro can be a tricky task, considering the sheer number of options. A week might not be enough time to see everything, so it’s best to divide your time well. So, for example, draw up a culture itinerary that involves visits to parks and gardens, and another that takes in the city’s iconic spots, including the more accessible favelas, which have become veritable tourist attractions nowadays.
With summer on the horizon, make sure there’s time for the beaches, making proximity to the sea a priority. We can start by choosing a hotel in Copacabana. Located in a great place, directly opposite the seafront, the Pestana Rio Atlântica encourages guests to discover some of Rio de Janeiro’s main attractions nearby, such as the Praia Vermelha and Praia do Leme on one side, and Arpoador, Ipanema and Leblon on the other. Staying in Copacabana means being close to the city’s finest sands.
Culture, parks and gardens
Situated in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood, the Parque Glória Maria Cultural Centre, previously named Parque das Ruínas, is a good place to start. Rio de Janeiro’s Theatro Municipal, known for its eclectic architecture, is also one of the main points of interest in the city centre. Speaking of this particular art, the Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) is well worth a visit for those interested in contemporary architecture, or the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, (CCBB), which is a must. The same can also be said of the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, which feels like a trip back in time.
When it comes to parks and gardens, a trip to Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) is a tourist classic. Try to do the whole journey, starting at Praia Vermelha beach and taking the cable car up to the famous mountain, enjoying the stunning 360-degree view that combines city, sea and mountains. Other suggestions are Quinta da Boa Vista, Parque Lage and the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.
Iconic places
Complete the classic city tour with a trip to Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), finishing off at Pedra do Telégrafo, currently very popular with tourists, where the landscape is equally impressive. On a different note, in the northern part of the city, many visitors flock to the Jornalista Mário Filho Stadium, better known as the Maracanã, the name of the local neighbourhood.
For a completely different experience, check out one of the city’s best-known favelas, such as Rocinha, Vidigal, Santa Marta, Pereira da Silva or Santa Teresa. Book a tour with a local guide, who will show around and explain the history and different features of each place.
