In one of the most beautiful rooms of Pestana Palace Lisboa, you will find a piano with a history.
On one of his first trips to New York, Dionísio Pestana stood outside a Steinway & Sons shop, marvelling at the prices. The piano that his mother, Caridade, had given him as a boy, to which he’d shown little interest in or talent for, turned out to be made by one of the world’s finest houses.
After phoning his mother to discover its whereabouts, the piano was shipped from South Africa to his residence on the 18th floor of the Pestana Carlton Madeira, before taking pride of place in the family living room. Finally, in 2001, he found the perfect place for it: in one of the most beautiful lounges at Pestana Palace Lisboa, where it can be seen – and played.
