São Sebastião Fort is undoubtedly one of the most important landmarks in Angra do Heroísmo, which is the only town in the Azores to hold UNESCO World Heritage Site status (since 1983). Built in the 16th century, the fort played a decisive role in defending the region and country, particularly from Sir Francis Drake’s attack in 1589, when the English privateer was prevented from docking, rebuffed by the force of the fort’s cannons.
Standing atop a cliff, the pousada is part of Angra’s historic centre, however, as soon as we pass through that grandiose 16th-century arch, we are whisked back in time. Set within its robust walls, the hotel’s charisma is based on its history, which was well preserved by the conversion work that took approximately three years to complete, at a cost seven million euros. The project was designed by architect Isabel Santos, who not only restored the buildings inside the fort (which now house 20 rooms and much of the common areas), but also constructed a whole new wing.
Opened in 2006, the pousada combines contemporary architecture with centuries-old design, hence its Historic Design Pousada label. The straight lines of the hotel building don’t extend beyond the walls and aren’t even visible from the outside, maintaining the fort’s silhouette. Inside, here and there, parts of the old wall are skilfully integrated into the different areas.
The equivalent of a 4-star hotel, the Forte Angra do Heroísmo Pousada has an outdoor pool with a view of the ocean, where dolphins and even whales can sometimes be seen. On greyer days (which tend to occur in the Azores), a great option is the small library, which is kept stocked by the readers and travellers who use it. Other attractions include the Sala dos Canhões (Cannon Hall), which has an arched stone ceiling and small spotlights. Ideal for events, it can accommodate up to 100 people.
The pousada restaurant highlights the island’s profound connection to the sea with intense flavours, offering various regional specialities, many including Atlantic fish.
