From Lisbon to the Algarve, find out what to expect at some of Portugal’s golf destinations.

Golf’s origins are a little uncertain, although we know the game dates back to 15th-century Scotland, due to historical documents of the time indicating that the game had been banned because it distracted Scottish soldiers. As the centuries passed, golf grew in popularity. The first known course is the Old Course in St Andrews, where there are records of games being played in the 16th century. By the 19th century, the game had reached England and the USA, where landmark tournaments, such as The Open Championship (the ‘British Open’, in 1860) and the US Open (in 1895) were organised.

Played throughout the world, golf remains a popular sport. Portugal considered one of Europe’s best golf destinations, combining a mild climate, stunning landscapes and quality infrastructure. Whether you’re in the Algarve or Greater Lisbon, there’s always a golf resort to suit every occasion.

Algarve

The Algarve is well known for its golden sandy beaches, sunny climate and internationally renowned golf courses. Pestana Golf Resorts boast challenging layouts, set in impressive natural settings, surrounded by pine trees, lakes and, sometimes, breathtaking views of the Atlantic.

Some of the Algarve’s best courses include the Pestana Gramacho (18 holes, a distance of 6,107 metres), the Pestana Vale da Pinta (18 holes, a distance of 6,127 metres), the Pestana Silves Golf (18 holes, a distance of 5,592 metres), the Pestana Alto Golf (18 holes, a distance of 5,432 metres) and the Pestana Vila Sol (27 holes, three different distances, between 6,274 metres and 6,393 metres).

In addition to enjoyable rounds of golf, the Algarve offers plenty to see and do. Visit the beaches and picturesque towns of Lagos, Tavira and Loulé, while savouring local cuisine that includes fresh seafood dishes and regional wines. Water sports, hiking and cycling are other activities available.

The Pestana Sintra Golf is one of the many options for enjoying a few days of relaxation and practicing this sport.

Greater Lisbon

Located in an area that includes both Cascais and Sintra, the Lisbon region is a top destination for golfers, offering a host of other interesting and different things, just a short drive away. A couple of examples are Cascais, with its charming coast, and Sintra, with its impressive palaces and historic parks, which would seduce any seasoned visitor.

Between Cascais and Sintra we find the Pestana Beloura golf course, which was designed by Rocky Roquemore, a renowned American golf architect. Covering a distance of 5,716 metres, the course provides both a sporting challenge and enjoyable experience.

Just 30 minutes away is Lisbon, a city steeped in history and culture. Wander the seven hills of the Portuguese capital, discover the neighbourhoods of the historic centre and visit Belém, home to the Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery and, of course, the famous Belém custard tarts. Those in Cascais can enjoy the beaches, marina and restaurants serving fine fish and seafood, while visitors to Sintra step into a fairy tale, as they immerse themselves in wonderful palaces and gardens.
